Want to rock out with your love for Jesus?
Christian rock has become a massively popular music genre for those of us that want to worship with a bit more oomph than how we do it in church – and without the evil influences in much of today’s secular music!
These 40 Christian rock bands range from pioneers to chart-toppers, and have all shaped the Christian rock landscape while spreading the word of Jesus Christ.
Let’s check them out!
40. Nine Lashes

Nine Lashes is a Christian band, despite receiving a lot of mainstream attention. Their sound is often compared to Breaking Benjamin, with an alternative and hard rock influence that’s perfectly displayed in one of their most popular songs: “Anthem of the Lonely.”
39. Manafest

Hailing out of Canada, Manafest started off as a Christian rapper in 2000 and later blended his sound with rock. His genre-melting approach is perfectly shown in his hit song “Impossible,” which features Trevor McNevan of Thousand Foot Krutch (coming up later in this list).
Manafest just released his first new song of 2024, “Unstoppable.”
38. Day of Fire

This American Christian rock band has been on an indefinite hiatus since 2010, so it’s unlikely that we’ll hear their unique sound again.
Day of Fire’s spiritually-charged “Cornerstone” is one of their top hits, which won Rock Recorded Song Of The Year in 2005 at the GMA Dove Awards.
37. Kings Kaleidoscope

Formed in 2010, Kings Kaleidoscope is still actively bringing unique and experimental twists to Christian rock.
“Felix Culpa” is a perfect example of their creativity and musical innovation!
36. Ashes Remain

We haven’t heard anything new from these guys since 2017, but they’re still actively cooking up their emotional and melodic tracks – hopefully there’s something new coming soon!
Still being discovered today, their hit “On My Own” is a powerful track that talks about how Jesus reaches out to us even in our darkest times, and remains wildly popular with over 23 million views on YouTube.
35. DecembeRadio

With a unique sound inspired by hard rock and blues-rock, DecembeRadio’s “Gasoline” and “Drifter” are two tracks that really showcase their genre range.
34. Pillar

These guys are some pioneers in Christian rock and Christian metal, rocking the music world since 1998. Their popular track “Bring Me Down” perfectly reflects their energetic and hard-hitting sounds.
Pillar announced a reunion tour in November 2023, with the tour scheduled for June-July 2024 – we can’t wait to see these guys live again!
33. Switch

Not to be confused with the mega-popular band Switchfoot (who we’ll talk about later), Switch is an interesting band because they’re a group of worship leaders and pastors passionate about spreading the word of God through music.
Their alternative and post-grunge sound is catchy, and we could sing along to songs like “Symphony” all day!
32. The Afters

Formed in 1999, The Afters have had a huge part in shaping Christian music in general. Their pop-rock sound offers something for everyone, with songs like “Light Up the Sky” still loved 13 years later.
The Afters is still active today, with new tracks such as “God Is With Us” keeping us singing along.
31. Sanctus Real

Another highly influential band formed in the late 1990s, Sanctus Real boasts an alternative rock sound that tends to be a bit on the softer side, but still gets the energy flowing!

Also formed in 1999, Decyfer Down boasts a powerful and hard-hitting sound that’s still loved in the Christian rock community today.
Their song “Crash” is a great example of their sound, and they recently released a new single on January 26, 2023 called “Cycles.”
27. Superchick

Admittedly a strange name, Superchick was formed in 1999 and had a great run until 2013.
They’re one of the few Christian rock bands with a female lead vocalist, and blend a variety of genres – they’ve often been compared to a harder-sounding Avril Lavigne in songs like “Stand In the Rain.”
26. Audio Adrenaline

One of the pioneers of Christian rock, Audio Adrenaline formed in 1986 and played a significant role in the growth of Christian rock towards the mainstream, creating hits that still remain today – like “Big House.”
25. Family Force 5

Family Force 5 has had a rep for being called “controversial Christian music,” but they’ve made a strong name for themselves with their unique blend of rock, electronic, and dance influences.
For example, “Love Addict” is a perfect example of their wild but addictive (pun intended) sound.
24. Underoath

Underoath was formed in 1997 and put raw emotion into their hardcore and metalcore tracks. Their music created a balance between chaos and harmony – but unfortunately the band lost their Christian roots in 2016.
I still wanted to include them as their stance up until then was unapologetically Christian, and songs like “Writing On the Walls” were a unique sound in Christian rock.
That said, they do include profanity in their current music, so stay aware, and decide for yourself what you think is right in terms of enjoying their music – I encourage you to pray for them that they may find their way back to Jesus.
23. For King + Country

For King & Country, stylized as For King + Country, is a duo consisting of brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone.
They’re a bit on the softer side, and have been very active since their forming in 2007 – they just released a song called “Checking In” featuring Lee Brice.
22. Anberlin

One of the hottest bands in the early 2000s and 2010s, Anberlin’s alternative rock sound is a wonderful blend of introspective lyrics and powerful riffs.
Songs like “Feel Good Drag” are still popular to this day, but the band has been back together since 2018 after a long break, so check out their new stuff!
21. Chris Tomlin

One of the most well-known names in Christian music, Chris Tomlin is the brain behind many modern worship classics such as “How Great is Our God.”

Another band with a female vocalist, Flyleaf formed in 2002 and offers an intense, dynamic, and bleeding-with-emotion sound as seen in “All Around Me.”
They were on hiatus from 2016-2022, but are back together and hopefully making a lot more music for us to enjoy!
16. Jars Of Clay

While they’ve slowed down with releasing new music (although they still do sporadically), Jars Of Clay had a massive influence in early Christian rock. They formed in 1993, and their breakout hit “Flood” is still loved today.
15. Building 429

Building 429 released their massively popular song “Where I Belong” back in 2013, which earned them a Grammy nomination and a constant spot in Christian radio.
Fun fact: they’re named after a specific room in the church where they first practiced together as a band!
14. Delirious?

While Delirious? may be officially disbanded, you’d be doing yourself an injustice by not listening to them today.
They started out in 1992 in England, and came out with hits like “I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever.”
13. P.O.D (Payable on Death)

With influences of rock, reggae, and nu-metal, P.O.D has had massive mainstream success and continues to perform today. They’ve been compared to Linkin Park with their unique sound.
Their song “Alive” is one of their most well-known tracks.
12. Disciple

Check out “Be My Escape,” which showcases their catchy and energetic style.

But on top of the hard rock tones are meaningful lyrics talking about how we need God in all we do.
7. Tenth Avenue North

A long-standing band that’s been around since 1998, Needtobreathe blends folk and rock to create a unique sound that’s loved by millions.
A standout track is “Who Am I.”
5. Third Day

A legend in Christian rock, Third Day boasts a unique Southern vibe that blends rock and gospel influences.
They formed in 1991 and were active until 2018, leaving us with tons of amazing songs like “I Need A Miracle.”
4. Casting Crowns

Casting Crowns actually started out as a student worship band in 1999, but came to be an extremely successful Grammy-winning Christian band!
One of their most popular songs is “Lifesong,” which comes from the self-titled album “Lifesong” that won a Grammy in 2005.
3. Newsboys

The Newsboys have gone through a lot of member changes since their start in 1985, and they’ve even inspired a series of movies through their song “God’s Not Dead,” which gave them a ton of popularity.
