No one knows exactly when Jesus is coming back, but the Bible gives us signs to watch for.
His return is certain, but the date is unknown (Matthew 24:36).
Until then, we’re called to stay faithful, live righteously, and share the Gospel.
Let’s check out everything the Bible says about when Jesus is coming back!
What Did Jesus Say About His Return?
Jesus made one thing crystal clear:
“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” — Matthew 24:36
Translation?
If someone claims to know exactly when He’s coming back, they don’t.
But Jesus did give us signs of His return.
What Are the Signs of Jesus’ Return?
According to Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21, here are 5 key signs leading up to Jesus’ return:
- False prophets misleading people (Matthew 24:11)
- Wars and rumors of wars (Matthew 24:6-7)
- Natural disasters increasing (Luke 21:11)
- Widespread wickedness and loss of love (Matthew 24:12)
- The Gospel being preached worldwide (Matthew 24:14)
These things have been happening for centuries, which is why every generation thinks they are in the end times.
Are We in the End Times?
Short answer?
Maybe.
Long answer?
We’ve technically been in the “last days” since Jesus ascended.
In 2 Timothy 3:1-5, Paul describes the last days as being full of:
- Selfishness and greed
- Disobedience and arrogance
- A form of godliness, but no real faith
Sounds familiar, right?
But instead of obsessing over the timeline, Jesus calls us to live ready every day.
Failed Predictions: Why Do People Keep Getting It Wrong?
History is full of failed predictions about Jesus’ return.
Here are a few notable ones:
- 1844: The Great Disappointment — A preacher named William Miller convinced thousands Jesus would return. Spoiler: He didn’t.
- 1914, 1925, 1975: Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Failed Predictions (see more on how Jehovah’s Witnesses differ from Christians)
- 2011: Harold Camping — A radio host set May 21, 2011, as the date. When it didn’t happen, he moved it to October. That didn’t happen either.
Jesus Himself said in Acts 1:7, “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by His own authority.”
If Jesus wanted us to know the exact date, He would’ve told us.
Different Christian Views on the Second Coming
Not all Christians agree on how Jesus will return.
Here are the main views:
1. Premillennialism
Jesus returns before a literal 1,000-year reign on earth (premillennialism is popular among evangelicals)
2. Postmillennialism
The world gets better over time, then Jesus returns. (Less popular today.)
3. Amillennialism
The 1,000 years in Revelation are symbolic, and Jesus could return at any time.
Which one is right?
In my opinion, it’s not really about picking the “winning” view.
It’s about being ready, no matter how it happens.
How to Prepare for Jesus’ Return
If Jesus could return tomorrow—or in 1,000 years—how should we live today?
- Stay spiritually awake. Jesus warned against being caught off guard (Luke 12:35-40).
- Share the Gospel. The good news is meant to be spread (Matthew 28:19-20).
- Live a life that honors God. Not out of fear, but because He calls us to holiness (1 Peter 1:16).
Waiting for Jesus isn’t about watching the news for clues.
It’s about living like He’s coming back today—because one day, He actually will.
Final Thoughts: Trust in God’s Timing
Jesus is coming back.
That’s a fact.
But obsessing over dates, charts, and conspiracy theories?
That’s a distraction.
Instead, trust God’s timing.
Live your life like His return is right around the corner.
And when He does come back—whether it’s tomorrow or 1,000 years from now—you’ll be ready.
